This catalogue accompanied Sharjah Biennial 12: The past, the present, the possible. In these pages, Hoor Al Qasimi introduces the Biennial as a crucial platform for Sharjah’s past and future, followed by an essay from Eungie Joo, SB12 Curator, contextualising the works selected as part of the Biennial. The introductory pages include essays from Kristine Khouri and Rasha Salti who discuss their research on the 1978 International Art Exhibition for Palestine and its historical relations to Japan, and Maryam Kashani who critically reflects on the lectures and discussions held during March Meeting 2014, the initial platform for the ideas explored in SB12. A reprint of Henri Lefebvre, The Right to the City, is also found in these pages and translated into Arabic for the first time.
The artist pages of this catalogue include contributions from Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri, Nasser Abou-Rahme, Fouad Asfour, Tarek Atoui, Doris Chon, Doryun Chung, Abraham Cruzvillegas, Cristiana de Marchi, Sarah Demeuse, Virginie Dupray, Roberto Echen, Reem Fadda, Hu Fang, Julieta González, Stamatina Gregory, Hai-Ming Huang, Ryan Inouye, Eungie Joo, Jitish Kallat, Mami Katoaka, Hassan Khan, Hyunjin Kim, Heejin Kim, Wonjoon Lee, Mariah Lookman, Laura Metzler, Fabio Morais, Molly Nesbit, Louise Sarant, Eva Scharrer, Franklin Sirmans, Cauleen Smith, Pooja Sood, Rayyane Tabat, Gael Teicher, Yassmeen Tukan, Kaelen Wilson-Goldie, Brian Kuan Wood, Lynette Yiadom-Boakye and Anthony Yung.
